Sailor Hat Summer

On a recent trip to Spain I stopped in a thrift store that had an incredible selection of vintage 60s-70s hats. Amongst the different styles were a lot of colorful striped sailor hats that I LOVED. I tried to find one in my size but sadly they were all too small (see the very serious try-on pictures below). I think they were probably meant for children. Typical that something I like is made for a child!

When I got home I tested out making my own sailor hat with a combination of fun printed fabrics (more serious try-on photos below). I added a soft spike to the top of the first one I made, inspired by medieval helmets I saw in London (but that’s another story). It came out almost perfect. I didn’t add interfacing to the inside panels and I think it is better with that stiffness.

Now that I had an idea of how best to make them, I decided to make a bunch to sell. When I am making multiples of something I like to set the goal of making 5 pieces. It’s an easy goal to hit and it makes it feel like there is enough of a “collection” for people to choose from. I love making these hats since each one is it’s own unique piece. I started selling them in my new online store. You can see a few of them below and shop all of them here.
